The AI Assistant can reply in the language you prefer. You can set a language once so every conversation follows it, ask for a different language in the moment, or simply let the assistant match whatever language you write in.
Set a preferred language for every chat
If you want the assistant to reply in the same language all the time, set it as a preference. Once saved, new replies follow it automatically without you having to ask.
- Open your Settings.
- Find your profile and personalization preferences, where your name and how the assistant addresses you are kept.
- Set your preferred language to the one you want.
- Save your changes.
From then on, the assistant uses that language as its default across your conversations, including replies that reach you through connected phone channels.
Tip: Your preferred language is part of what the assistant remembers about you, alongside your profile and any custom instructions. Updating it here changes the default everywhere, so you don't have to repeat yourself in each new chat.
Switch language for a single conversation
You don't need to change any settings to switch languages in the moment. Just tell the assistant in the chat.
- "Reply in French from now on."
- "Answer me in Spanish for the rest of this conversation."
- "Please respond in Japanese."
The assistant keeps using that language for the rest of the conversation. This is the quickest option when you only need a different language for one task and want to keep your saved preference unchanged.
Let the assistant match your language automatically
If you'd rather not choose at all, write your message in the language you want the reply in. The assistant reads the language of your request and generally answers in the same one, so you can move between languages naturally from one message to the next.
If you ever want to make this explicit, you can ask directly:
"Always reply in whatever language I write to you in."
Translate a specific reply
You can also keep working in one language and ask for a translation only when you need it. After any reply, ask the assistant to translate it, for example:
- "Translate that into German."
- "Give me that summary in both English and Portuguese."
This is useful when you're drafting something to share with someone who reads a different language, such as an email or a document, while keeping the rest of your conversation in your own language.
How preferences and in-chat requests work together
Both options can be used together, and it helps to know which one wins:
| What you do | What happens |
|---|---|
| Set a preferred language in Settings | Becomes the default for all new conversations |
| Ask for a different language in a chat | Overrides the default for that conversation |
| Write in another language | The assistant usually matches it in its reply |
An in-chat request always takes priority over your saved default for that conversation. Your saved preference stays intact and applies again the next time you start fresh.
If a reply comes back in the wrong language
If the assistant answers in a language you didn't expect, a short correction usually resolves it:
- Reply with a clear instruction, such as "Please continue in Italian."
- If it keeps happening across conversations, check your preferred language in Settings and confirm it's set to the language you want.
- For technical terms, product names, or quoted text, the assistant may keep some words in their original language on purpose so the meaning stays accurate.
Your language preference only affects how the assistant writes back to you. It doesn't change the content of documents, spreadsheets, or messages the assistant creates unless you ask for those in a specific language too.
