Setting up an automation

Run a backend function on a schedule, once, or when data changes, from the Automations tab or by asking the builder.

On this page

An automation runs one of your app's backend functions without anyone pressing anything: a nightly summary, a reminder the day before, a notification when an order lands.

The quick way

Ask the builder: every weekday at 9, email me the bookings for the day. It writes the function, tests it and creates the automation.

From the dashboard

Open Automations

Press New automation.

Pick a function

An automation runs a backend function. If the app has none, ask the builder for the work you want done first.

Choose the trigger

Recurring (every so many minutes, hours, days or weeks, at a time you set), One time, or the builder can set one that runs when data changes.

Save and try it

Press Run now, then open Logs on the row.

Ending, pausing, archiving

  • A recurring automation can run for ever or end after a number of runs.
  • Switch one off with the toggle. Archive it to keep it out of the way; restore it later.
  • Taking the app offline does not stop automations. Switch off the ones you do not want running while it is offline.
