Incoming calls are being dropped Troubleshooting

Why inbound calls to a rented number get dropped when no agent is connected or inbound calling is off, and how to fix it.

If callers reach your Praxivara Phone number but the call ends immediately, the number almost always has nothing set up to answer it. A rented number can only handle incoming calls when an AI agent is connected to it and inbound calling is switched on. This article walks through the checks that resolve the problem.

Why this happens

A rented phone number does not answer calls on its own. It needs an AI agent connected to it to have the conversation, and it needs inbound calling enabled so it will pick up. If either piece is missing, there is nothing on the line to greet the caller, so the call is dropped.

The two most common causes are:

  • No agent is connected to the number, so no one is there to answer.
  • Inbound calling is turned off for the number, so it will not accept calls even if an agent is assigned.

Connect an agent to answer inbound calls

Assign an agent so incoming calls have someone to reach:

  1. Open Praxivara Phone and select the number that is dropping calls.
  2. Assign an agent to answer inbound calls on that number.
  3. Write a greeting for the agent to open the call with.
  4. Save your changes.

Once an agent is connected, callers will hear the greeting and be able to speak with it in real time.

Tip: Make sure the agent you connect is one you have actually finished building and are happy with. The greeting is the first thing every caller hears, so keep it short and clear.

Turn on inbound calls for the number

Even with an agent connected, a number will not answer if inbound calling is off. To check:

  1. Open the settings for the number in Praxivara Phone.
  2. Find the Accept inbound calls setting.
  3. Switch it on.
  4. Save your changes.

With inbound calling on and an agent connected, the number is ready to receive calls.

Confirm the number is fully set up

Run through this quick checklist before testing again:

  • The number is active on your account and has not been released.
  • An agent is connected to answer inbound calls.
  • The agent has a greeting.
  • Accept inbound calls is turned on.

Test the number

  1. Call the number from any phone.
  2. Wait for the greeting to play.
  3. Speak with the agent to confirm the conversation works end to end.

If you still hear the call drop, reopen the number's settings and re-check that both an agent is connected and inbound calling is on, then save again.

If you released the number

Releasing a number stops it from receiving or placing calls, and any agent that depended on it can no longer take calls on that line. If a number was released, it is no longer available on your account and calls to it will not connect. You would need to rent a new number and set it up again to restore inbound calling.

Note: You can rent numbers up to the limit included with your plan. If you have reached that limit and need another number, you may need to release one you no longer use or move to a plan that includes more.

Still not working?

If you have confirmed an agent is connected, the greeting is set, and inbound calling is on but callers are still being dropped, reach out to support with the affected number and the time of a recent test call so the team can take a closer look.
